History of Youth Empowerment Project, Inc.
Youth Empowerment Project, Inc. was founded in 1998 on the porch of an old farmhouse. Executive Director Barbara Gaston, wanted to help children with behavioral problems control their inappropriate behavior. The program was for children with behavioral problems who hadn't committed crimes, but whose parents had reached a point where they didn't know how to handle them.
In November of 2000, YEP moved from the old farmhouse porch to a spacious building in downtown Utica. The new two story facility allowed YEP to expand its programs of working with at-risk children, one-on-one violence prevention, mentoring, and empowering parents, The new facility also provided a place for YEP to have a New York State Certified Food Pantry.
In 2008, YEP purchased another facility and expanded across the street, employing 80 people and serving 15,000 people a year with a variety of programs.
